Hurkle-Durkle
Five Minute Friday
Writing for joy and practice
Most Fridays, I join an online Christian writing community, Five Minute Friday. We are given a one-word prompt and write – unscripted, unedited, pure free-write – for 5 minutes. Five Minute Friday is a great place to hone my writing practice and be encouraged by other writers as I write. I will set the timer for five minutes and then write. Here we go! I am excited to invite you in, welcome.
The Prompt: Lazy
I instantly thought of hurkle-durkle as a better word to describe slow mornings of rest and relaxation. Although, I do love to say and hear lazy mornings because it inspires a sense of being that feels joyful
Hurkle-durkle is a Scottish term that means "to lie in bed or lounge about when one should be up and about." It originated in 19th century Scotland and has recently gained popularity on social media. The resurgence of hurkle-durkle is partly due to its mental health benefits. It encourages a slower, more relaxed start to the day, allowing individuals to enjoy peaceful mornings. Therapists suggest that incorporating this practice can reduce stress and improve overall well-being.

I do love slow mornings whenever I can get them. They don’t always come easily but they are ones in which I find myself feeling more content and joyful.
Creating Space for Slow Living
We have recently finished the week of Spring Break with our kiddos and I am glad we had a few slow mornings together. I hope that they remember these times as moments in which they could breath and didn’t feel the need to hustle. In a world when things are moving fast and others are constantly pushing us to do more and be more. I hope together we can cultivate a time of stillness and slowness to savor the moments we get to live together. I pray that during these times new neural pathways are created that will counteract the constant hustle our world seems to thrive on. Next time you want to be slow getting out of bed, just tell yourself to hurkle-durkle and I promise you will linger just a bit more in the moment of slowness and beauty.
I have been slow in returning to the Five-Minute Friday moment but I am glad I did! Thank you for joining me!
