Love That Refuses to Be Rushed: A Poem on Writing and Waiting

Five Minute Friday: Legacy

I sat with the word legacy on the day of my son’s 15th birthday. Even if the words come slowly there is a legacy that has been a foundation for his life. I see her face next to his in the picture and remember my Abuelita’s love that refused to be rushed. She taught me how to hold him fast with my love but to also let the goodness and mercy of God follow him all the days of his life. Happy birthday sweet boy!

Most Fridays, I join an online Christian writing community, Five Minute Friday. We are given a one-word prompt and write – unscripted, unedited, pure free-write – for 5 minutes. Five Minute Friday is a great place to hone my writing practice. It also allows me to be encouraged by other writers as I write. I will set the timer for five minutes and then write. Here we go! I am excited to invite you in, welcome.

Legacy

I want words to pour out again,

to flood my mind and make my heart sing

I want my fingers to fly over the keyboard,

to find no stopping place—to go, go, go

Instead, the words drip, drip, drip

They tease me and torture me;

they persist, insist on arriving,

and just as quickly dissipate

I know they are there—I can see them

I can feel them approach and retreat

And even as my fingers halt,

moving in fits and starts…

There is a lullaby being whispered in my soul:

Don’t leave. Stay. Be where you are

Wait and see what happens.

Don’t tire of being present to yourself

There, in the in-between, you are being formed

There, in the diaphanous space, find magic

There, in the stillness, percolate new words

They can’t be rushed—neither can your soul

The words forming in the deep recesses

call to the deepness of the universe.

They are not about quick and easy;

They are about beauty and legacy

Love—

that refuses to be rushed

Gracefully,
